Torch Protection – A Little About Us
My family has been in the Metal and Machining trades since 1921.
Plasma Torch Protection System got its start over 28 years ago in our shop as we found a need for plasma torch protection. At the time we were operating two different manufactures CNC plasma cutting tables and found right after installation we needed to develop some kind of protection for the plasma torches.
Our entry to CNC plasma 28 years ago was first with a CNC table that had a manufacturer supplied gantry and a customer build table. A year later the other, a mid-level cost factory CNC cutting table, was added. Both were 4 by 10 foot cutting tables. These CNC units replaced an old panagraph cutting unit and a Linde electronic tracing eye that had been converted over from oxy-acetylene to early plasma back in the dark ages when we had to use Co2 and nitrogen gas to plasma cut. No, this was not high definition plasma. The plasma torch actually had a sharpened tungsten electrode.
At the time most basic entry level CNC cutting tables were sold without any plasma torch protection.
We immediately found this was a not good. We looked around and there were in fact a couple of plasma torch protection systems offered by the very high end plasma CNC cutting table manufacturers. Some of these units were over $2,500.00 and in most cases higher.
So out of necessity we decided to build our own! With the help of our very talented machinist Craig Vansickle our very first design came to be. After thousands of hours of arc on cutting time with different CNC cutting tables and a lot of thought and engineering along the way we decided that our protection systems worked so well that we should offer them to the CNC cutting world.
Our very first design was and still is a micro switch controlled unit that allows the plasma torch to swing out of the way of a collision and at the same time tripping an internal micro switch that would stop both plasma arc and gantry movement. A few years later we came up with a design for a Magnetic Breakaway Plasma Torch Protection System plasma torch holder that was very simplistic in design and just plain easy to install and use.
As most modern CNC plasma software stops gantry movement in the event of lost arc the magnetic plasma torch holder came into its own being.
Both of these unit designs have their own place within the industry and it is really up to the end user which is best for their application.
We have supplied Plasma Torch Protection Systems to major steel yards, high schools, colleges and fabricators that are operating multi plasma cutting operations as well as to many one man operations working out of their garage.
We have always believed in only building the best quality products possible All of our Plasma Torch Protection Systems are made entirely of American origin materials, machined and assembled entirely in the USA!
